The assessment center method provides valid measures of leadership and managerial competencies. Multiple trained assessors observe participants perform in simulations of multiple organizational challenges. Assessors’ ratings provide valid information for selection, promotion, diagnosis of strengths and developmental needs, and development of leadership and managerial skills.


As a non-profit organization, the Thornton Institute for Assessment Center promotes evidence-based humane assessment center applications for talent management around the world.


  • Evidence-based and employee-sensitive assessment centers benefit both individuals and organizations
  • Theory, research, and practice inform responsible assessment center applications
  • Applications for selection/promotion, diagnosis, and development are designed, implemented, and evaluated differently


  • Foster responsible assessment center practices around the world, especially in developing countries and emerging markets
  • Provide resources related to assessment centers
  • Support seminars, conferences, and workshops among advisors, affiliates, and other talent management specialists
  • Serve as liaison to match organizations having research needs and resources with scholars having research interests and expertise
  • Host symposia among advisors and affiliates of the Institute
